Shelling and killings in the city killed scores of civilians and wounding hundreds.
Between 25 and 27 November the city was shelled by Ethiopian and Eritrean forces (AFP) on the one side and Tigray forces on the other (according to OHCHR and EHRC). A lot of residential properties and businesses sustained damage, including the local hospital where the maternity ward was damaged. On 27 November the city was overtaken by the federal and allied forces. Immediately after capturing the town, Eritrean soldiers started shooting in the streets, going house to house killing people and looting properties. Scores of people died protecting the properties from looting.
